Bluetooth, Wi-Fi Connection And BBQ APP

Signals lets you connect with both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for an excellent remote monitoring experience.  When connected, the connection will automagically switch between the two seamlessly so you stay connected as long as you can get internet service.

Signals uses the same free BBQ APP as the Smoke and BlueDot and is available for download to any Android V6.0 or above or Apple IOS V10.3 or later device.

You can use the APP to give custom names to each probe/channel, set high or low alarms and view or save graphs of your cook.  You can save up to 10 previous cooks in the cloud using Wi-Fi for later viewing.  You can view a live cook from multiple internet-connected devices at the same time.

The APP also lets you connect and monitor multiple ThermoWorks devices simultaneously which is a great perk for BBQ teams at competitions.

Displaying Fahrenheit or Celsius can be selected within the APP or on the physical device itself.  There is also a setting for adjusting the temperature refresh rate in increments of 10, 20, 30, or 60 seconds in the APP.

Signals also works when you can’t or don’t want to connect to your smartphone as a standalone unit.

Pro-Series High Temp Cooking And Air Probes

Signals comes with three Pro-Series, commercial-grade cooking probes, and one Pro-Series commercial-grade Air Probe & Grate Clip.  Each 47-inch high-temperature probes provide plenty of length for almost every situation.

ThermoWorks Pro-Series probes are widely considered the best in the business when it comes to accuracy, heat resistance, and durability.

An innovative spring strain-relief is located on both ends of the cable where the port and probe are attached that greatly reduces the chance of damage.

These probes come with commercial durability for general use and are heavy-duty and built to last.

ThermoWorks also included 8 High Temp Silicone Color Probe Rings (2 of each color) that you can slide onto the end of each probe to help you keep track of which probe is connected where.

If you have ever used a multiple probe monitoring system, you will understand and appreciate how convenient this little detail is.

12V USB Power Adapter With Rechargeable Battery

Signals is powered by either the rechargeable, cord-free battery for up to 16 hours of continuous use or can be plugged into an outlet directly by using the 12V USB power adapter.

The USB adapter and USB-C cable are also used to recharge the battery when needed.

Large, Backlit LCD Display With 4 Panels

The display is divided into four panels that show the upper and lower temperature settings and the name for each probe when in use.

The display features large 0.5″ (13mm) characters for easy viewing and will light up with the push of a button so cooking in low light situations won’t slow you down.

Visual And Audible Temperature Target Alerts

The Signals temperature alarms are both visual and audible making it easy to see or hear alerts while cooking.

When the temperatures of your meats or the grill itself fall outside the upper or lower set ranges, the alarm will sound and the display panel will flash.  Choose one of four volume alert levels or the alarm can be muted altogether.  You will still be able to see the visual notifications when the volume is muted.

The alarm will also sound on your smart device and you can choose to receive vibrate notifications as well.

Splash-Proof Sealed Design And Magnetic Mounting

The splash-proof housing features commercial durability that beats houseware brands easily.

Rated to IP66, this means it is safe to use outdoors without fear of moisture damaging your device.  Meat juice or sauce spills won’t slow Signals down either.

The case also features two strong magnets on the back for convenient mounting to any metal surface.  Just don’t mount it directly to your BBQ lid as the heat will definitely melt the plastic housing.

Extreme Accuracy And A Wide Temperature Range

You won’t find a more accurate wireless probe thermometer on the market unless of course, you are using another ThermoWorks product.

When monitoring temps between -4 to 248°F (-20 to 120°C), Signals is rated to ±1.8°F (±1.0°C) accuracy.

The wide temperature range of the Pro-Series probes is -58 to 572°F (-50 to 300°C) which is wider than you will most likely require for all your cooking needs.

My Personal Experience Testing ThermoWorks Signals

I have had the pleasure of using this device for several weeks now and have put it to the test on over 10 cooks so far with a variety of meats and methods.  Below are my personal musings on my experiences.

Initial Set Up and BBQ APP

I want to point out that I tested the connection and APP using an IOS device.

I already had the APP downloaded, as I own several ThermoWorks products and use them often.  I can say that the BBQ App is easy to download not to mention simple to use and intuitive.  This is not overly complicated software and is a breeze to navigate.

The set up will ask you to make a Bluetooth connection first, and then you will be able to connect to your Wi-Fi by entering your information.  It was super easy for me to connect and I was done in less than a minute.  My phone found the device right away and connected with the push of a button.

I am not a huge fan of Bluetooth as it is limited by line of site (walls or other obstacles may cause you to lose connection) to stay connected and has a short 95 feet range.

Luckily, Signals has a solution to that problem. With this Wi-Fi connected thermometer, Bluetooth is only needed to initially get you set up on your Wi-Fi network.  You can disable Bluetooth after initial set up and you will stay connected through Wi-Fi.

You can adjust the high and low-temperature alarm through the app for each probe channel any time before or during the cook.  Even when an alarm had gone off, I was able to tap the up button to instantly set a new alarm temp.

The graph feature does a nice job of giving you the information you need without a lot of unwanted fluff.  It was especially nice to be able to save and go back to see how my previous cooks progressed with a nice plotted graph.

Construction And Durability

Signals is built like a champ and looks and feels durable and solid.  It is slightly larger than all my other units, which is perfect for viewing the four-panel display screen.  It was not too big and I was easily able to place it on my grills side table with plenty of space to spare.

The water-resistant design was perfect as I already experienced light rain while cooking the other night.  The moisture had no discernable effect on the unit whatsoever.  Just don’t totally submerge the unit in water and you will most likely be fine.

The Pro-Series probes lived up to my high expectations.  The cables are flexible and durable.  I was able to easily thread them through my vents to the rack area without damaging the wire.  The cable is definitely more rugged than most.  The probe wires are nicely secured with stainless steel wrapping with a fairly robust connection to the wire which I really liked.

Each probe tip tapers down to a very small size that is perfect for leaving the smallest hole possible when inserting into meat.

I confirmed that the probes are extremely accurate.  I tested the accuracy against my ThermoWorks MK4 Thermapen during every cook and it matched up almost exactly each time.

The Pro-Series High Temp Cooking Probes that come in the package with Signals measures up to 572°F heat resistance with a cable max temp up to 700°F for short-term exposure.  That makes it the highest rated probe of its class.

Price And Warranties

ThermoWorks Signals Wi-Fi And Bluetooth-Enabled, 4-Channel Cooking Alarm Thermometer is priced at $229.00 currently.

That might seem a bit steep for a thermometer, but not when you consider the Wi-Fi capability, the accuracy, and commercial quality manufacturing.

The 6-month warranty is huge for temperature probes of this kind and shows the confidence that ThermoWorks has in its product.  The device itself comes with a two-year warranty.

The Bottom Line

If you’re looking for the best temperature probe thermometer for monitoring the doneness of your meat when barbecuing, it’s no secret that ThermoWorks is king, and Signals is just another example of why that is.

From the commercial-grade durability to the industry best accuracy, Signals should be on everyone’s wish list who are serious about grilling and smoking.

Signals is a great option for BBQ teams at competitions, commercial kitchens, and professional chefs.  The ability to stay connected and monitor your cook accurately at all times is critical and this device will do just that.

It’s also a perfect choice for the backyard griller and smoker who wants the ability to monitor the cooking temperature of multiple meats simultaneously from your smartphone, without having to invest big money in a fancy new Wi-Fi connected grill.

Overall, this is another big win for ThermoWorks and one I definitely recommend.
