The Ivation wireless BBQ thermometer is a low price option for anyone looking into buying a wireless thermometer. With what seems to be the standard of 300’ in range, the receiver offers you the option to move around your home, or yard, while continuing to monitor the temperature of your food. The Ivation BBQ thermometer has two probes, one of which is made specifically to monitor the grill (or oven) temperature. This lets you track the rate at which your food will be cooked, and be assured that your temperature is not fluctuating too much when you open the lid to turn the food.
The LCD screen makes sure you can see the receiver’s monitor even at night. If you are trying to grill later in the evening, this is very important and keeps you from needing a flashlight just to read your temperature.
The Ivation wireless thermometer also allows you to set a temperature range for both probes individually. By utilizing this you can avoid overcooking your food. Getting the center temperature to that perfect point, so you know it is both safe to eat and bound to be delicious.
How To Use The Ivation Wireless BBQ Thermometer
The Ivation BBQ thermometer is not as user-friendly as one would hope, but it still allows for a good amount of control. After inserting the batteries to both the transmitter (with the probes) and the receiver, you need to turn both on nearly simultaneously. It is within the first second or two of powering on that the transmitter and receiver search for each other, and pair. If they don’t pair, you need to turn both off and try again.
After pairing the devices, you can set the temperature range for the probes. The function for this is to press and hold a button that increases the temperature number. By choosing the timer feature you can use the same function to set the timer, either counting up or counting down.
The probes for the Ivation grill thermometer can unplug from the transmitter, allowing for easy cleaning.
The Ivation wireless BBQ thermometer is able to read temperatures from 32 to 572 degrees Fahrenheit. Most users find it very accurate when grilling. The manufacturer claims it is accurate to within two degrees Fahrenheit.
The Ivation thermometer does not come with built in temperature presets so you will have to manually input the necessary temperatures range you are looking to stay under. This can be anywhere from rare at 125°F, medium rare at 135°F, medium at 145°F, medium well at 155°F. The Ivation is not an instant read thermometer and is not as fast as others are but it is fairly accurate. The Ivation receiver refreshes the temperature around every 10-15 seconds so you may have a slight pause between readings.
Features And Specs
The Ivation comes with a transmitter and handheld receiver. It does not have the ability to pair with a smart device (phone or tablet) and only relies on the receiver for pairing. This is nice for the technologically challenged. The wireless range of up to 300 feet allows you to focus on other things while the food is grilling.
Ivation wireless BBQ thermometer comes with illuminated display screens on both the transmitter and receiver with numbers that are large and easy to read. This makes reading the temperature in low light conditions a breeze. The temperature easily switches between Fahrenheit and Celsius modes by toggling a switch.
The Ivation BBQ thermometer is also water resistant, so even on those rainy days, you are good to go. Unfortunately, the two included temperature probes are not and will need to be washed by hand after each use.
The transmitter and receiver run off two AAA batteries each with a weight of 8.1 ounces and a length of 4.8 inches.
The probes are rated to withstand up to 716°F. They can read between 32°F and 572°F. There are two probes, each with its own specific purpose. One probe is 6” long and has a pointed tip. This probe is meant to be inserted into your food. The other probe is shorter and has a blunt tip. This probe is not meant to be inserted into food, but instead to be attached to (or placed on) the inside of the grill or oven. This probe is meant to monitor the temperature of your cooking area. The probe cord length is 30 inches.
The receiver can monitor both probes temperatures at the same time so you will always know what the current temperature of the food you are cooking is, and how hot it is inside the grill.
Timer And Temperature Ranges
The Ivation wireless BBQ thermometer is made to observe the temperatures of its probes without you having to constantly watch the thermometer. The temperature range setting allows you to set a high and low temperature that you would like your food to be at. If the temperature leaves that temperature range, an alarm will sound on the receiver. With this, you can set your temperature range, clip the receiver to your belt, and play ball with your kids or friends without having to worry about burning your food.
The setting of timers and temperature alerts can be a little complicated, but that can be said of many other thermometers out there as well. It is best to read through the instruction manual first. It will save you a lot of time from fiddling around with the controls.
Belt Clip And Stand
The belt clip and stand are a nice addition to the Ivation BBQ thermometer. Being able to clip the receiver to your belt means you can work hands-free on other dishes without worrying about your food. If you don’t have a belt on, or you want to be able to watch the timer/temperature while you prepare another dish, using the stand is a great alternative. Having the ability to do either of these is a nice perk to this thermometer.
Who Is The Product For?
If you are looking for a cheap wireless thermometer to get going now and on a budget, the Ivation wireless BBQ thermometer might be the one for you. It gives the same perks as some of its competitors, but at half the price (sometimes). If you haven’t used a thermometer for cooking before, and want to dabble in it a bit before spending a pocket full on a top of the line thermometer, you may look to the Ivation. If you aren’t worried about customer service or product warranties, that makes the Ivation even more acceptable.
Who Should Not Get It
If you want a product that will last you a while, the Ivation BBQ thermometer might not be a desirable choice. It is a cheaply made product, and many of the customer reviews label it as such. Also, the customer service at DBROTH is notoriously terrible. If you are a person that likes to have the option to return, discuss issues, or complain to a company, don’t bother with the Ivation. DBROTH will not be a good company for that.
If you want a user-friendly device, I would recommend going to another brand as well. The Ivation gets the job done, but it is tricky and not made with the deepest insights. It is worth extra cash to get a product that will work simply and easily.
The best part of the Ivation grill thermometer is its price. Coming in at half the price or less than many of the competitors, it is hard to beat the price. The wireless range of 300 feet is right up there with top competitors. The belt clip is a nice feature too.
The cons of this product can take a while to explain. Quickly through them though,
- The interface is not user-friendly, only being able to count up.
- The devices don’t pair easily and can take several tries every time you power them off.
- There is a lack of customer driven features, like preset temperature guides.
- The single food probe and single grill probe means you are stuck with what you have unless you want to spend more money on another food probe.
- The service you get through DBROTH is brutal. They have one-star ratings across a range of websites and for good reason.

I highly recommend looking at other products. While the Ivation wireless BBQ thermometer will do the job of reading temperatures, it is cheap for a reason. The quality you get for this low cost screams at you through the entire use. And the quality of customer service is not fun to play with.
Will it get the job done? In most cases, yeah. But be sure to do your research and read buyer reviews before you make your decision.
