“Editor’s Choice – Best All Around Automatic BBQ Temperature Controller”

#1 Flame Boss 300-WiFi Universal Grill & Smoker Temperature Controller

Editor's Choice

DCS Series 9 Evolution Built-in Gas Grill
If you’re looking for a higher-end temperature controller from a reputable company, the Flame Boss 300-WiFi Universal Grill & Smoker Temperature Controller is a great option.

It offers the ability to connect with Wi-Fi to allow you to check and control your cooking along the way.  The easy-to-use interface will make you wish you have a temperature controller from the start.

For those who like to cook multiple meats at once, the Flame Boss 300 accommodates up to three meat probes, allowing you to monitor the temperature of multiple foods at the same time.  However, only one meat probe and one pit probe are included.

Once your meat has reached your set temperature, an alarm will alert you with a text, making things super convenient for you.

While this controller holds temperature well and offers an easy-to-use app, keep in mind that connecting to Wi-Fi may be tricky at first.  Make sure to follow the user manual or get in connect with Flame Boss for help.  Also, unless you are viewing the actual controller or app, the only option for temperature alerts are via text message, which can be a bummer.

Regardless, the Flame Boss 300 is compatible with most smokers and grill types, is attractive in appearance and allows you to step away from your smoker/BBQ while the controller does the work for you.

PROs
Easy to set up
Works with most steel smokers
Reliably holds temperature within a few degrees
Allows your grill or smoker to be set-and-forget
Easy-to-use app that allows you to adjust the temperature from anywhere
Plenty of meat probes
Great manufacturer to work with

CONS

Connecting to WiFi can be a bit tricky at first.
Can’t get temperature alerts if you don’t have texting on your phone

#2 CyberQ Cloud BBQ Temperature Controller

Top Pick

DCS Series 7 Traditional Built-in Gas Grill
The CyberQ Cloud BBQ Temperature Controller is priced in the higher range but offers plenty of features most smokers and barbecuers would be content with.  It’s also compatible with a ton of smokers and grills.

Before we go on, let’s give CyberQ a bit of bragging rights where it’s due.  They won the Pitmaster Award for Best Value from AmazingRibs.com, proving that their temperature controller offers great bang for its buck.

With exclusive ramp mode, you can ensure that the CyberQ Cloud BBQ Temperature Controller won’t let your meats overcook.  This optional feature works by automatically reducing your temperature as the food is close within 30 degrees of being finished cooking.

As a bonus, you can receive food-ready alerts via e-mail, text, or even audio depending on your preference.  This device can also be hooked up to Amazon Alexa, allowing you to ask Alexa to monitor or alter your current cooking without lifting a finger.

While this temperature controller is pretty badass, there is one big con to consider.  Know that the remote monitoring and controlling interface is via a website instead of an app.  This is not only less quick to access, but the website is also slow to load when in heavy use.

Setting that aside, this temperature controller offers great temperature regulation, helps you burn less charcoal, and gives you the option to share your cook with others online, not to mention a ton of other helpful or just plain cool features.

PROs
Won the Pitmaster Award for Best Value from AmazingRibs.com

Works with a lot of smokers

Proper temperature regulation

Several features to pick from

Helps preserve charcoal, thus, saves you money

Probes are lengthy (6 feet long)

Website allows you to share your cooks with anyone online

CONS

Remotely controlled via a website, not an app; not as convenient and slower to load

#3 Auber Instruments WiFi BBQ Controller

Best Buy

Coyote S-Series Built-in Gas Grill
For a more moderately-priced device, the Auber Instruments WiFi BBQ Controller is a reliable option.  It even won the 2018 Pitmaster Award on AmazonRibs.com for its overall value.

Auber Instruments claims that their BBQ controller offers great stability and tighter PID controls than other controllers on the market.

With convenient Wi-Fi control, one can monitor and control their cooking wherever they go whenever they please. Connecting to Wi-Fi on this controller is incredibly quick and easy, as it should be.

This controller also comes with three convenient control modes and features open lid detection to ensure your cooking session will end on a good note.

One of the greatest pros of this temperature monitor is that it is ideal for low-and-slow cooking.  As simple as it may sound, not every temperature controller allows for this.  Another thing I like is that this controller is equipped with durable probes.

It’s also nice to know that there is a great team at Auber Instruments behind this controller just in case things go wrong; they are quick to respond to any questions you may have.

There aren’t many cons present with this controller in my opinion.  There aren’t many long-term user reviews available online either but those reviews that are out there are very positive overall

One reviewer stated that there was some difficulty monitoring their cooking away from home.  Although, this may be more of an issue with one’s mobile device or their phone’s Internet plan than the actual app this temperature controller uses as I have never had an issue.

PROs
Won 2018 AmazonRibs.com Pitmaster Award for Best Value
Easy to connect the controller to Wi-Fi
Great to use for low-and-slow cooking
Exceptional customer service from manufacturer
Durable probes

Includes a lot of handy BBQ accessories

CONS

One report of monitoring not working when away from home

#4 Flame Boss 200-WiFi Grill & Smoker Temperature Controller

Top Pick

DCS Series 7 Traditional Built-in Gas Grill
Featuring a beautiful LCD display and an adjustable stand, the Flame Boss 200-WiFi Grill & Smoker Temperature Controller is attractive and versatile at the same time.

With Wi-Fi, smoking and barbecuing are made easy, allowing you to set and forget as you spy on your cooking session while on the go.  It’s also equipped with a temperature alarm that will text you once your meal is complete.

For convenience, this Flame Boss temperature controller features an automatic mode that allows you to cook at the same temperature as you did on your previous cook.

Reviewers most commonly note that the Flame Boss 200 is easy to put together – practically ready right out of the box, is fantastic for low-and-slow cooking, and has a team of great manufacturers behind the product that responds quickly to any concerns.

But coming to the downsides of this temperature controller, some claim that setting up WiFi for the first time is a little confusing.  Once one figures this out, however, it is reliable and no longer an issue.  Secondly, while many other temperature controllers don’t offer it either, this product isn’t waterproof, limiting when one can use the controller at all.

Overall, the Flame Boss 200 is a great temperature controller for newbies, considering it is easy to use, and for those who prefer low-and-slow cooking.  It has a few cons, but this controller provides a stable temperature range and is quick to start up each time.

PROs
Fast and easy to set up out of the box
Turns on instantly when you plug it in (no on/off button)
Quick-to-respond manufacturers
Great for low-and-slow cooking
Easy to monitor
Holds a steady temperature

CONS

Difficulty setting up WiFi at first
Not waterproof

#5 Pitmaster IQ120 BBQ Temperature Regulator Kit

Best Buy

The Pitmaster IQ120 BBQ Temperature Regulator Kit claims to have all the bells and whistles you need for a proper barbecue or smoker temperature control.  In fact, food show presenter and TV personality, Alton Brown, claimed that this very temperature kit is “cool.”

Being toward the lower to moderate price range for temperature controllers at just under $200, the Pitmaster IQ120 offers quality beyond its price range.  It features a digital display, 12 adjustable parameters as programmable features, and offers food-ready alerts.

However, one of the biggest “complaints” is that the hose on this device is made of cheap material or simply appears unattractive. In my opinion, this is just a minor con that can be overlooked, as this temperature kit is still eye-catching overall.

But regardless of aesthetics, the Pitmaster IQ120 is about spot-on when it comes to holding your desired temperature and ensures meats come out tender and juicy.

Consider opting for this temperature controller if you like low-and-slow cooking that can be performed even when it’s cold and/or rainy outside.

You won’t regret purchasing the Pitmaster IQ120 BBQ Temperature Regulator Kit as it provides exactly what you need and offers sturdy construction – with exception of the hose – to last years.

PROs
Sturdy construction
Quality probes
Versatile in a variety of temperatures and weather
Holds temperature with only a few temperature increments at times
Set and forget cooking
Great for low-and-slow cooking
Meats come out tender and juicy

CONS

Hose is cheaper material for the price

#6 Quick Grill Medium: Original Folding Charcoal BBQ Grill

This might be a bit of a controversial pick here as it is relatively unknown and is designed for only a limited amount of grills on the market.  In fact, if it wasn’t for the last fact, I would have rated it much higher on this list as the SMOBOT is one of my favorite temperature controllers period.

Before considering purchasing the SMOBOT Wi-Fi Kamado Grill and Smoker Temperature Control, keep in mind that this is a fairly new controller on the market.  Fortunately, it appears that users are happy thus far with what it provides.

The SMOBOT includes Wi-Fi connectivity and this temperature controller also features two sturdy meat probes, a robotic damper, and open-lid detection to provide both quality and proper function.

As for the pros, many state that this product has hefty, quality construction and admire that it isn’t necessary to have a noisy blower (one of my favorite features).  Whenever one had a minor concern or question in regard to this temperature controller, reviewers found that the manufacturers were friendly and quick to respond.

As an added bonus that many reviewers also like is that you can simply use a USB battery pack to power this device if you aren’t near an outlet.

Since this is a newer product, as mentioned above, there aren’t really any cons noted as of yet.

But one potential con is that this temperature controller originally had its remote monitoring interface on the web.  The company is currently switching over to an app which is still in beta mode. That said, there may be some minor flaws with the app for now but the company is working hard to fix them.

In general, the SMOBOT temperature control seems to have a lot of potentials, and it seems that everything the company claims their temperature controller provides really is present in their device.

It is my go-to controller for my Big Green Egg Kamado style charcoal cooker now.

PROs
Web interface is user-friendly
Can save your cook settings to use later
Connects quickly to WiFi
Well-constructed
No noisy blower necessary
Quick response from manufacturer

CONS

App for this device is still under beta-testing as of this writing

#7 Auber Instruments SYL-1615SYS-W PID Temperature Controller for Smoker/BBQ

Not everyone is able to spend a lot on a temperature controller.  Fortunately, the Auber Instruments SYL-1615SYS-W PID Temperature Controller is priced just under $160.  It even won a gold medal award for Best Value from AmazingRibs.com.

It features a simple, bare basics design but is still functional nevertheless.  It offers a bright, LED display perfect for smoking or barbecuing at nighttime and includes a built-in buzzer that can give off a low limit or high limit alarm.

But with the lower price, there are trade-offs.  The Auber SYL-1615SYS-W doesn’t have the most accurate temperature readings.  It can also take longer to heat up when trying to reach higher temperatures, according to some reviewers.

However, after getting used to the temperature variations of this controller (or opting for an alternative temperature gauge) and with a bit of patience, these two cons shouldn’t be huge issues.

Placing emphasis on the pros of this temperature controller, it’s important to remember that this is an easy-to-install device that holds temperature well and does great in preventing temperature from being altered by outside sources such as rain, high heat, and the like.

That all said, it gets the job done no problem.

PROs
Won AmazingRibs.com gold medal
Easy to install
Holds temperatures well
Prevents temperature overshooting from weather changes, ambient temperature changes, opening/closing the lid, etc.

CONS

Temperatures don’t always read accurately
Slowly heats up to higher temperatures

#8 BBQ Guru DigiQ DX2 BBQ Temperature Control

Best Buy

This next barbecue temperature controller may sound like a Japanese cartoon; however, it is highly rated among users.  This product also earned Amazon’s Choice on Amazon.com and a silver medal for Best Value from AmazingRibs.com.

BBQ Guru claims that their DigiQ DX2 BBQ Temperature Control device resolves any temperature swings your smoker or barbecue may have, and in turn, assuring your meats don’t come out burnt, tough, or dried.

With precise temperature control provided by this device, BBQ Guru suggests that your meats will come out juicy and tender.  This can be confirmed by reviewers as this device helps hold temperature darn near perfectly.

While a majority of users love this temperature controller, there are multiple complaints that the probes on this device were not working.  Some who had issues such as this also mentioned that BBQ Guru wasn’t as cooperative as they would have liked when contacted.

However, the majority are very happy with this product, as noted by the fact that over 70-percent of reviewers gave it a 5-star rating.

This controller is loved as the temperature can be quickly raised if needed, it ensures smoke is consistently released, and it offers a convenient food alert with volume increments from 0 to 10.

Overall, the BBQ Guru DigiQ DX2 is best for barbecue and/or smoking enthusiasts.

PROs
Won silver award for Best Value from AmazingRibs.com
Easy installation
Holds temperature perfectly
Ideal for low-and-slow cooking
Increases temperature quickly
Makes smoking meats easier, ensuring smoke is consistent
Set and forget type of cooking

CONS

Reports of probe defects from some users
Customer service complaints among multiple reviewers

#9 BBQube TempMaster Pro BBQ Temperature Controller

DCS Series 7 Traditional Built-in Gas Grill
The low-to-moderately priced BBQube TempMaster Pro BBQ Temperature Controller is like no other considering it features 3-in-1 function, working both as a temperature controller, Sous-Vide Cooker, and a wireless thermometer – compatible with most smokers and barbecues.

Design-wise, it’s attractive and innovative with its bright, easy-to-read OLED display.  With a large dial present on this temperature controller, it is even easier to navigate the menu compared to other controllers on the market.

According to BBQube, this temperature controller offers probes that are five times faster than ever before, already receiving five-stars for their efficiency.

This all sounds fantastic, but there are a few complaints that need to be mentioned.  One reviewer said that the app associated with this device loses graphical data with time.  Another didn’t like that this device doesn’t offer audible or visual alerts.  Ultimately, these aren’t huge drawbacks.

All in all, the temperature probes are well-constructed on the BBQube TempMaster Pro BBQ Temperature Controller.  It’s also a reliable device considering it holds temperatures well and has accurate temperature readings.

Best of all, this device earned finalist of the Vesta Awards at the 2018 Heart, Patio and BBQ Expo in Nashville for its overall quality.

PROs
Finalist of the Vesta Awards at the 2018 Heart, Patio and BBQ Expo in Nashville, Tennessee
Holds temperature well
Precise cooking temperature readings
Compatible with most smokers and barbecues
Well-made temperature probes

CONS

App loses graphical data
No audible or visual alerts

#10 PartyQ BBQ Temperature Controller for Big Green Egg or Ceramic Cookers

Best Buy

Compatible with Vision Classic Ceramic Grill, Big Green Egg (medium, large, XL), Cypress Grill, Kamado Joe, Primo Grill (all models), and DragonFire Grill

For those who want to barbecue or smoke on camping trips or while tailgating, the PartyQ BBQ Temperature Controller for Big Green Egg or Ceramic Cookers is incredibly lightweight and portable, easy to take wherever you wish to BBQ or smoke.

As well as this, this temperature controller earned Amazon’s Choice on Amazon.com as one of the best PartyQ products.

While it only includes 1 thermometer probe, this device offers a large, easy-to-read digital display; a flexible neck mount; and battery operation to add to the portability of this device.

Although, if low-and-slow cooking is your thing, make sure to avoid getting this temperature controller as it tends to overshoot target temperatures. As a result, your cooking may end up hotter than expected.

Additionally, the batteries on this device only last four hours. Several reviewers state that they would have been happier with an AC adapter instead, which this product lacks.

Lastly, the temperature tends to read 20 degrees Fahrenheit lower or higher than what it really is.  That said, a separate temperature gauge may be necessary when using this temperature controller.

But putting everything into perspective, the PartyQ BBQ Temperature Controller may have its faults, but the pros still outweigh the cons as it works in many types of weather, allows food to be cooked evenly, and eliminates temperature fluctuations that are common with many smokers and grills.

PROs
Easy to set up before first use
Portable and lightweight
Works well even in snow and high heat
Ensures food is cooked more evenly
Fantastic at eliminating temperature fluctuations
Made in the USA

CONS

Batteries don’t last long; no AC adapter
Tends to overshoot target temperature, thus, isn’t very ideal for low-and-slow cooking
Temperature readings are a bit off

Barbecue Temperature Controller FAQ:

In case you aren’t very familiar with temperature controllers, make sure to read through the following frequently asked questions prior to buying one.

How Does A Temperature Controller Work?

A temperature controller usually is equipped with a sensor to provide it feedback when the temperature changes.

In response, while also keeping the desired set value in mind, the temperature controller alters the amount of airflow to maintain a certain temperature, typically by adjusting vents or by blowing air into the device with a fan.

How To Control Temperature With A Barbecue Temperature Controller?

The great thing is, temperature controllers take the guesswork out of maintaining a particular smoker or barbecue temperature for you.

All you have to do is set your desired parameters and pay attention to your temperature controller’s readings for any alterations.

What Types Of Temperature Controllers Are There?

The following are the three basic types of temperature controllers:

  • On-off control: Simplest type of temperature control; output is either on when needed or off and nothing in between
  • Proportional control: Decreases power supplied to the heater once the temperature reaches closer to its set value
  • PID control: Consists of proportional, integral, and derivative control (hence its name, PID); composed of complex processes

In the case of temperature controllers for barbecues and smokers, PID makes the most sense and is the most ideal.  A PID controller is the best bet, but you will pay a little more for the advanced technology.

What BBQ Temperature Controller Is Best?

The temperature controller best suited for anyone will depend on several factors such as the price of the controller, how easy it is to use, its appearance, and so on.

However, based on my testing and research of the 10 best BBQ temperature controllers, the below controllers rank the top in terms of functionality, popularity and star rating:

The SMOBOT WiFi Kamado Grill and Smoker Temperature Controller is also a well-loved device.  However, it’s still a newer controller on the market, has a new app recently opened for beta-testing, and has minimal reviews compared to other controllers out there.

Regardless of our top 10 list, it will be important for you to make your own decision on which temperature controller will be the best buy for you in specific.

Check out reviews along the way, research more on temperature controllers to have a better understanding of what you may want, and ensure you’re purchasing a device made from an honest manufacturer that will back up any concerns you have.  Look at both the big picture and the specifics.

Do I Need A Temperature Controller?

You don’t necessarily need a barbecue temperature controller, but they are beneficial in situations where you would want to obtain a stable temperature, such as in the case of barbecuing or smoking.

Particularly, you would need a barbecue temperature controller if your current barbecue or smoker doesn’t have the best temperature gauge or temperature control.  Thus, a controller could help you maintain an ideal temperature, providing accurate readings in the process.

The whole idea of a temperature controller is to allow you to achieve the exact flavors and textures you want your meats to have, which can be provided by the right temperature and amount of smoke.

Final Verdict – What Is The Best Barbecue Temperature Controller

The best BBQ temperature controllers use PID controllers to manage the temperature and include remote controlling and viewing capabilities.  These factors make sure you get the best results for every grilling or smoking session.

While not all the temperature controllers on this list feature each of the above qualities, many do, and the ones that don’t are still worthy choices if you are looking to save a few bucks.

While there a are many good choices on this list, the Flame Boss 300 is the top choice.

Without question, the Flame Boss 300 provides quality and high performance and checks the boxes for everyone’s needs.

The bottom line is that if you are in the market for an automatic temperature controller for your grill or smoker, you won’t go wrong with any of the quality choices on this list.

Each controller offers good to great value and should serve you well for many cooks to come.

Once you figure out your budget and needs, I’m confident there is the perfect controller here for you.
