A commercial-grade outdoor grill, by definition, is a grill that’s installed in a shared property like an apartment or condo complex, country or yacht club, or resort for use by residents or guests.

If your mind immediately jumped to that little black charcoal grill on a post your local park or old apartment community had, think again — we’re talking high-quality gas grills with the same flexibility and features your home grill has.

The main difference here is the construction. Commercial-grade gas grills are built to withstand the elements and have regular use by lots of different people, so it’s important to invest in one that’s clearly marketed as built for commercial use.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the key factors to look for when shopping for a commercial-grade grill. These include a sturdy construction with high-quality materials, multiple burners, fuel type, and accessories like warming racks and side burners.

If these sound like features we recommend looking for when researching standard grills, it’s because they are! There are just a few key differences that separate a grill you’d buy for your family to use on the back patio from one that you’d install in the courtyard of a condo building for continuous use by multiple families.

We’ve been researching and testing grills for years, and we’re putting that knowledge to use to help you find a long-lasting commercial-grade outdoor gas grill that will add value to your property for years to come.

Here we’re rounding up our top 10 picks for the best commercial gas BBQ grills, plus what we recommend you look for in a commercial-grade gas grill. We’ll wrap the guide up with a few frequently asked questions to help give you all of the information you need to make an informed decision about the best grill for your property.

The Infinite lives up to its name with a spacious 1020 square inches of total cooking area (714 in the main grilling area and 306 on its included bun rack). The 36-inch model clocks in at roughly 41 inches wide and 24 inches deep, making it an excellent size for just about any shared outdoor space.

The heat output on the 36-Inch Infinite Series also packs a punch, with five 14,750 BTU burners (if you don’t want to do the math, that’s 79,250 BTUs for the entire cooking surface) that allow the grill to reach its maximum temperature in just five minutes. The burners are placed evenly every 5 ¾ inches to create an incredibly even heat.

This grill is available in both built-in and freestanding configurations. The freestanding option also introduces modules that can help you create a completely custom cooking space for your property.

The Infinite Series comes in both propane and natural gas-fueled models, with continuous spark ignition and a pilot light tube that allows you to turn the burners on or off instantly.

These grills and their cooking surfaces are completely made from durable 304-grade stainless steel, meaning they’ll be able to withstand years of commercial usage.

We also have to give a shout-out to the grill’s double-walled lift-assisted lid, which can help boost cooking power by 40% when it’s closed.

While the Infinite Series doesn’t come with a side burner, you can utilize its upper rack to keep food warm or toast buns, so multitasking is still possible.

#2 PGS T-Series Commercial Gas Grill With Timer

Model # S36TNG Built-in | Model # S36TNG Standalone

Top Pick

Quality: 5/5
Performance: 4/5
Features: 3.5/5
Value: 3.5/5

PGS T-Series Commercial Gas Grill With Timer

The PGS T-Series is a true workhorse designed to stand up to continuous use in multi-user settings.

One of the standout features is its built-in FuelStop safety timer, which shuts off gas flow after one hour and prevents it from being left on. That’s a real lifesaver for commercial settings where a forgetful resident or guest could leave a grill running, leading to a major safety issue.

The 39-inch T-Series model offers a 36-inch by 20-inch cooking surface for a total of 720 square inches of cooking area. Under the grates, you’ll find three heavy-duty burners with a combined total of 67,000 BTUs.

In addition, the T-Series includes stainless steel flip baffle grates, which give you even heat and help reduce the risk of flare-ups with little maintenance required.

While we’re focusing on the built-in 39-inch natural gas model today, the T-Series is also available in 30 and 51-inch models, a propane-fueled option, and a freestanding configuration for $2,699 more.

The grill also features a battery-powered continuous spark ignition that lights the grill safely and quickly, so you never have to worry about issues hiring it up (just be sure to have extra batteries on hand ready for the day you’ll eventually have to replace them).

The T-Series’ exterior is crafted from 304-grade stainless steel, so it can hold up to both Mother Nature and human usage over the years.

PGS suggests that owners line the grill’s grease tray with foil to help with maintenance and easy cleanup and replace that foil every 10 uses or less if cooking particularly juicy food. If your commercial grill gets particularly busy and there isn’t someone around to keep an eye on the grease tray, that suggestion could turn into more of a burden.

The PGS T-Series Gas Grill Also Includes

If you’re looking for a truly versatile, feature-rich commercial gas grill, the PGS T-Series may not be for you. But if you’re in the market for a durable grill that’s designed to last through years of continuous usage, you’re in luck.

Additional features of the PGS T-Series include:

  • Instructions laser-etched on the control panel, so they’ll never get lost
  • Anti-theft control and timber knobs
  • Stainless steel rod cooking grids with Vari Grid spacing for versatility
  • Side-mounted thermometer
  • An optional warming rack accessory

While the T-Series does not come with a side burner, a built-in one is available for purchase from PGS if you’re building a full-blown community outdoor kitchen.

Again, the T-Series’ commercial-minded features — the one-hour safety gas shutoff, the laser-etched instructions, and the anti-theft control knobs — make this a solid option for anyone in need of a grill for a shared space.

PGS T-Series PROs & CONs

As we’ve mentioned, a huge pro of this grill is that it’s designed with multiple users in mind and stands up to all of the abuse multiple cooks can throw at a shared grill.

If your shared space is frequented by a variety of grillers with different skill levels who aren’t looking for any bells and whistles, just a straightforward grilling experience, the PGS T-Series makes a great choice.

PROs

Flip baffle grates help reduce the risk of flare-ups, without any ceramic briquettes to replace or maintain

Laser-etched instructions and anti-theft knobs mean the grill will always be ready for use, without any missing parts or confused grillers

The one-hour FuelStop timer gives peace of mind that the grill won’t be accidentally left on

Battery-powered ignition helps the grill light up safely and quickly every time

Available storage drawers, side burners, and access doors for the built-in configuration give you the option to build a true commercial-grade outdoor kitchen

CONS

Warming rack isn’t included automatically

Manufacturer’s suggestion of lining the grease tray with foil will require more maintenance to keep up

Cover not included

Solaire All Infrared Gas Grill

The Solaire All Infrared is a powerful, efficient gas grill that’s the perfect choice for multi-user settings that see a lot of action.

The Solaire is on the smaller end of the grills on this list, with 27-inch, 30-inch, and 42-inch models. We’ll be focusing on the 30-inch model in this review.

That size gives you a total grilling area of 703 square inches, with 455 on the main cooking surface and 248 on the removable warming rack.

The Solaire All-Infrared comes with two infrared burners, although you can opt to have one or both be conventional burners.

Can’t decide between burner types? The grill’s burners are easily removable for cleaning as well as conversion between the ceramic infrared and conventional U-burners.

Between the two burners, the grill has 55,000 BTUs of firepower, which help preheat the grill in just three minutes and cook food twice as fast. How’s that for a grill that needs to work for multiple people throughout the day?

The 27-inch model has two burners as well, while the 42-inch grill has three burners for a total of 82,500 BTUs.

Aside from size, Solaire also gives you the option to choose between natural and propane gas-powered models, as well as pick the mounting option that works best for you: built-in, cart mounted, bolt-down post mounted, or in-ground post mounted.

The Solaire springs to life quickly with a push-button rapid-start electronic ignition and reaches cooking heat fast, so users won’t have to wait around long to start grilling.

This grill’s 304-grade stainless steel construction stands out for its heli-arc welded seams and no mechanical fasteners, which eliminates areas where grease and moisture can build up over time. It also features a double-skin hood and hand-polished mirror finish accents for an eye-catching look.

Solaire All Infrared Gas Grill Also Includes

The Solaire All Infrared Gas Grill packs a punch and is incredibly efficient, which can help if your shared space has a lot of people wanting to use the grill on a nice day.

Its removable infrared burners are the star of the show here, but there are plenty of additional features on the Solaire to love, including:

  • Top-supported, self-trimming design on built-in units
  • Stay-cool full-width stainless steel handle
  • Folding side shelves on cart- and post-mounted options
  • Accessories available for purchasing, like custom covers, BBQ trays, griddle plates, wood chip smokers, steamers/fryers, insulated jackets, and conventional burners
  • The Solaire All Infrared comes with a removable drip tray, as well as stainless steel V-shaped cooking grids that help reduce the risk of flare-ups.

Side burners don’t come standard with the Solaire All Infrared, but there are drop-in options available for purchase if you’re going with the built-in model. You can also upgrade your grill with a rear infrared rotisserie burner and rotisserie kit for more cooking possibilities.

Whether you install a post-mounted model as-is in the courtyard of your apartment building or spruce up your resort patio with a fully-fledged built-in outdoor kitchen, the Solaire All Infrared will add plenty of value to your property and allow your residents or guests the fun of weekend grilling any night of the week.

Solaire All Infrared PROs & CONs

Plenty of size, fuel, and installation options to fit your outdoor space

Sleek, polished look will add value to your property

#9 ProFire Professional Series Gas Grill

Model # PF36G-P Built-in | Model # 2542103 Freestanding

Quality: 4/5
Performance: 4.2/5
Features: 3.5/5
Value: 4/5

ProFire Professional Series Gas Grill

The ProFire Professional is a high-performing multi-user gas grill with plenty of options to customize it into your own ideal commercial cooking machine.

It’s got a durable construction and features that make it both easy to use and fun for anyone looking to go beyond your run-of-the-mill commercial grill.

The Professional has a 714 square inch grilling surface, accented by commercial-grade stainless steel cooking grids. The rods of the cooking grids are placed close, so you can grill smaller or more delicate items with confidence without risking them falling through the grates.

The standard Professional model comes with six conventional burners, packing a total punch of 66,000 BTUs. You do have the option to upgrade to models that have two infrared burners and four conventional ones for a total of 76,000 BTUs.

Both ProFire Professional’s conventional and hybrid (four conventional, two infrared burners) models can also be upgraded to include a rear 11,500 BTU infrared burner for use with the manufacturer’s heavy-duty rotisserie kit.

The Professional comes in a wide range of size options as well, to perfectly fit your outdoor space. Both its freestanding and built-in configurations are available in 27-inch, 36-inch, and 48-inch models.

You have your choice of fuel type with the Professional as well, between propane and natural gas if your property has a gas line available.

The Professional is easy and reliable to start up, with an electronic continuous spark ignition system for hassle-free lighting every time.

A fantastic commercial grill needs to be able to hold up to the elements, and the Professional is no slouch in this department. It’s constructed of 304-grade stainless steel throughout, with a mirror-finished, two-layered lid to help retain heat and keep it cool for safety.

These gas grills also come with 16-gauge stainless steel Flavor Plates. These self-cleaning plates help distribute heat evenly while reducing the risk of flare-ups and vaporizing drippings to provide a delectable, smoky flavor.

ProFire Professional Gas Grill Also Includes

The ProFire Professional offers impressive upgrade options to really make it a fantastic choice whether you’re looking for a small, straightforward grill or a full outdoor kitchen setup for your property.

In addition to the burner, size, fuel, and configuration options, you can also swap out the standard cooking grids with Sear Magic grids. These grids are made from high-performance anodized aluminum and give you two cooking options: one side with ridges to create sear lines and a smooth, flat side for more delicate foods.

Other features and options you’ll find with the Professional include:

  • Rotisserie kit accessory for use with optional rear infrared burner
  • Included stainless steel smoker tray
  • Dual-purpose thermometer that can be left in the hood to gauge the grill’s internal temperature or removed and used as a meat thermometer
  • A Deluxe option available with interior halogen grill lights, curved lid, and warming rack
  • Cleaning up is also a cinch with a full-width pull-out drip pan.

The 48-inch Professional model is available with an attached side burner, perfect for cooking up sauces, sides, and more while being to keep an eye on the food on the main grilling surface.

Want a smaller model but don’t want to miss out on the benefits of a side burner? ProFire also carries options for drop-in side burners to round out your multi-user outdoor kitchen.

The ProFire Professional offers just what its name implies: a professional grilling experience for your multi-user setting, with customization options for plenty of flexibility when cooking.

ProFire Professional PROs & CONs

With a grill that has as many options as the Professional does, it’s not always clear which configuration to choose for the best grill performance. Take the Professional’s cooking grids, for example — the standard option will get the job done just fine, but user reviews suggest that the SearMagic grids with conventional burners provide the best performance.

Aside from notes like that, the Professional is still a phenomenal grill that delivers ease of use and firepower that’s perfect for a multi-user setting (which shouldn’t come as a shock — it’s manufactured by the same company that invented the first gas grill).

PROs

Several customization options to fit your space and needs

304-grade stainless steel construction can hold up to the elements

Unique SearMagic cooking grids offer a one-of-a-kind grilling experience

Included smoker box accessory

Made in the USA

CONS

Heat distribution and flare-up management are not as great with the standard cooking grids as it is with the SearMagic grids

ProFire Professional Customer Support & Warranty Info

Customer Support: You’ll find plenty of support options on ProFire’s website, with FAQs, brochures, owner manuals, and more available for self-service. If you need more help, you can contact the manufacturer by phone, email, fax, or online form.

Buyers Guide – What to Look For in a Commercial-Grade Outdoor Gas Grill

Cooking Surface Area | Heat Output (BTUs) | Burner Configuration | Fuel Type | Ignition System | Material Quality | Side Burners | Grease Management System | Additional Features | Warranty | Price

So you’ve set out to find the best commercial-grade outdoor gas grill for your shared property. But other than the commercial-grade designation, what should you keep in mind as you start researching and shopping for your grill?

Here’s what we recommend you think about as you look for your perfect grill!

*Note: For a much more comprehensive gas grill frequently asked questions and answer guide, check out my article: Gas Grill Buyers Guide

Cooking Surface Area

Arguably the most important thing to keep in mind when shopping for a commercial-grade outdoor gas grill is just how much cooking space it’ll give you and anyone else who uses it.

Aside from catering to a crowd, having a large cooking surface gives users more flexibility for creating different temperature zones and using direct and indirect cooking techniques.

A larger surface also provides more options for cooking different foods at once, meaning it can handle a whole meal without the chef having to stand over the grill and rotate food on and off all day.

As you start looking at grills, think of your ideal size in terms of the number of people you envision it serving at a time. Aim for a width of at least 34 to 42 inches for large groups or particularly busy properties. If you know this grill will be used for big parties or cookouts, you may even want to go up to an extra large cooking surface — those grills will be 43 inches wide or even wider.

Heat Output (BTUs)

BTUs, or British Thermal Units, is the measurement of how much energy is needed to increase the temperature of one pound of water by 1°F.

You’ll see BTUs listed when shopping for grills, as most grill manufacturers use that measure a grill’s performance based on the fuel the burners use in an hour. But don’t take BTUs as the only factor to consider when shopping!

High BTUs really won’t mean much if the grill can’t hold on to the heat it’s producing — if a grill has poor heat retention and circulation, that heat output doesn’t stay in the grill for long.

While we don’t recommend a high heat output as the only factor you look for when shopping for commercial-grade grills, it is something you’ll want to keep in mind if you’re looking for a large grill that will serve a lot of people.

A good rule of thumb to determine how many BTUs you need is to divide the number of BTUs listed on a grill by the total cooking surface in square inches. The resulting number should be around 110 BTUs per square inch — that will give the power the grill needs (coupled with good heat retention, of course) to cook for a crowd.

Burner Configuration

Commercial-grade gas grills come in a variety of burner configurations and types.

The most common you’ll find on the market are:

  • Cast stainless steel: which offers great rust resistance and quality.
  • Ceramic: which is rust resistant and fantastic for retaining temperature.
  • Stainless steel tubes: these are durable and offer some rust resistance.
  • Cast iron: which is heavy-duty but does rust over time.
  • Stamped stainless: a low-grade, lower-quality option.
  • Infrared burners: these can reach incredibly high temperatures and are usually seen as an add-on to another type of burner configuration.

It’s important to find a grill that has multiple burners that you can control individually since this contributes to even cooking and helps you achieve zone cooking with direct and indirect heat.

Fuel Type (Natural Gas or Propane)

When shopping for a gas grill, you’ll also have the choice between natural and propane gas. To use a natural gas grill, you’ll need to have a natural gas line in the area that’s easily accessible to hook up. Propane-powered grills can be placed anywhere since the fuel is contained within a portable can.

If your designated area doesn’t have a natural gas line, that’s an obvious downside to having a natural gas grill. But if it does, a natural gas grill will give you convenience and peace of mind to be able to grill as much as you want without having to go pick up additional fuel.

While buying more propane can be annoying, a pro here is that it’s available at just about any hardware or grocery store these days. The portability is also a plus, as you can grill wherever you like without worrying about a natural gas hookup.

Ignition System

When it comes to gas grills, there are just about as many ignition system options as there are burner types.

  • Hot surface ignitors: There are hot surface ignitors, which ignite the fuel using a small element heated up with electricity, similar to an electric stove.
  • Flame thrower, or Piezo ignition systems: These use a gas-fueled ignitor and friction to light a small tube that’s directed at the burner, creating a long flame. This long flame allows for the grill’s more sensitive components to be stored farther away from the burners, protecting them from heat and helping them last longer. Another bonus? Since they use the grill’s fuel to work, no electricity or batteries are required.
  • Continuous spark ignitors: A continuous spark ignitor uses an electrode attached to an ignition rod to create an ongoing stream of sparks as long as it’s activated. These systems require batteries or electricity to work.
  • Single spark ignition systems: A single spark ignition system, as its name implies, works a lot like continuous spark systems except for one key detail: they emit just one singular spark using a piezoelectric starter. Much like a Piezo ignition, no electricity or batteries are required for the system to work.
  • Match light burners: Finally, you have your match light burners, which are lit manually with a match after you turn on the fuel source.

No matter what ignition system you use, it all boils down to one thing: reliability. If your ignitor doesn’t work, your grilling plans are ruined. A battery-powered ignitor offers an easy fix if it ever fails, while other systems (or grills where each burner has its own ignition) can require costly repairs if they break down.

A great commercial-grade gas grill will also come with a manual ignition hole, so if your system does fail, you can light it with a match or lighter and get to grilling fast.

Material Quality

The majority of the gas grills on the market today will be made from cast aluminum, sheet metal, cast iron, or stainless steel. So which option should you choose?

Consider the type of weather the grill will be exposed to, how it will be used, and how often it’ll get fired up for some grilling.

Your commercial-grade gas grill is going to be spending a lot of time outside and seeing a lot of use from a lot of different people. Because of that, it’s essential to invest in a grill made from a durable material that will withstand the elements and a lot of use.

When it comes to durable, long-lasting materials, you can’t go wrong with 304-grade stainless steel. It’s great for heat distribution, rust-resistant, lightweight, strong, and streak-free, plus it won’t show its age for years.

No matter what material your grill is made from, regular maintenance is essential to keeping it in shape throughout the seasons, so be sure to clean and inspect your grill often!

Side Burners

A side burner sits next to the main cooking area of your grill and offers a bit of extra cooking space that you can control independently. You can use a side burner like a grill or use it with pots and pans to act as an extension of your indoor cooktop.

Side burners can bring tons of benefits to your commercial-grade gas grill, including allowing users to cook and warm multiple dishes at once, cooking with high temperatures necessary for wok cooking or searing.

They are also handy for cooking and warming sauces, cooking more food than the grill alone can handle, and serving as a backup in case the main ignition system fails.

Grease Management System

A grease management system is critical for any grill, especially a commercial-grade one that will be getting a lot of use. These systems help whisk grease and drippings away from the cooking surface, resulting in less greasy food and less gunk to clean up afterward.

While grease management systems can help keep your grilling surface clean, it’s important to give them some TLC as well. Encourage guests or your maintenance team to follow the grill’s instructions for cleaning the grease trap after every time use to make sure it continues to function as intended.

Additional Features (e.g., Rotisserie, Warming Rack, etc.)

Most grill manufacturers amp up their grills with bells and whistles that enhance the cooking experience, and commercial-grade grills are no exception.

You can find grills with rotisseries that allow you to slow-roast poultry, warming racks to keep cooked food at the right temperature while you finish cooking, storage cabinets and hooks for keeping tools and ingredients safe, and more.

These features may not be the first thing you look for when shopping for a grill, but once you have them, you’ll wonder how you lived without them. Additional features help expand your cooking options and can help make your outdoor cooking area nearly as versatile as your indoor one.

Warranty

Commercial-grade gas grills see a lot of use, which ups the risk of something eventually breaking. That’s where a warranty comes in.

Having a warranty on your grill is important to make sure it gets repaired quickly if something breaks without paying more than necessary. A 10-year warranty is a solid one to look for, although some manufacturers may offer a lifetime warranty to cover parts and labor for as long as you own the grill.

Price

Like your standard backyard barbecue grill, commercial-grade gas grills will vary widely in price depending on the quality and features. However, commercial-grade grills will typically cost a bit more than your average home grill.

Expect entry-level models without many additional features to start around $1,000 and premium luxury grills to run close to $20,000.

While you may look for a more budget-friendly option, it’s important to balance price with the quality you’re getting. After all, a commercial-grade grill is an investment that’s going to get a lot of use and add value to your property — it’s worth spending a little more to get a model that will last for years before needing to be replaced.

What Differentiates Commercial-Grade Grills From Residential Grills?

Size/Larger Grilling Areas | Shut-off Timers | Emergency Gas Shut-off With Timer | Theft-Proof Control Knobs

Commercial-grade grills are typically larger than residential grills, with a larger serving capacity. Size is not the only thing that sets commercial-grade grills apart. Safety features, such as emergency gas shut-off with timer and theft-proof control knobs, are also important considerations.

Commercial-grade grills typically have shut-off timers and a higher heat output than residential grills. These features ensure that the grill is safe and efficient for high-volume use. These features promote safety and convenience, making commercial-grade grills ideal for outdoor cooking in public spaces.

Size/Larger Grilling Areas

Commercial-grade grills are typically larger than residential grills, with a larger serving capacity. The cooking area is the primary factor in determining grill size, expressed in square inches.

Large gas grills usually have the biggest cooking areas, with higher-end models boasting the highest grade. When choosing a built-in grill for your outdoor space, it’s important to consider your needs and preferences. For example, the Weber Genesis E-325s has a 20% larger cooking area than other models.

Shut-off Timers

Shut-off timers are a safety feature found in many commercial-grade grills that offer convenience and peace of mind. These timers automatically shut off the gas flow and turn off the grill after a certain amount of time, preventing accidents and fire hazards.

They really get useful when you’re slow-cooking food that requires more time like large cuts of meat or slow-cooked BBQ. You simply set the timer and let the grill do its job without worrying about overcooking your food.

Some higher-end models even come with multiple timers, allowing you to set different timers for different cooking zones or food items. For example, the PGS T-Series grill will automatically turn off after one hour of non-use.

When installing a grill with a shut-off timer, it’s important to ensure that it is installed on a level surface to prevent personal injury or equipment damage. When choosing a commercial-grade grill, looking for models with shut-off timers is important to ensure safe and hassle-free outdoor cooking.

Emergency Gas Shut-off With Timer

Another important safety feature found in many commercial-grade grills is the emergency gas shut-off with a timer. This feature automatically turns off the gas flow to the grill in the event of an emergency or gas leak, helping to prevent accidents and injuries.

The timer function ensures that the gas flow is not only cut off immediately but also prevents any gas build-up, which can be a potential fire hazard. This feature is particularly important for businesses using grills in public spaces, where safety is a top priority.

It’s also a good idea to install this feature in your home grill, especially if you have a large outdoor cooking area and often entertain guests. When shopping for a commercial-grade grill, be sure to look for models with an emergency gas shut-off and timer function to ensure optimal safety.

Theft-Proof Control Knobs

Theft-proof control knobs are an important feature of commercial-grade grills, providing added security and peace of mind. These knobs are designed to be removable only with a special tool or key, making it tough for anyone to run off with them.

Theft-proof knobs are especially useful for public areas or outdoor kitchens that are left unattended for long periods of time. Some higher-end models even come with electronic controls that require a code to operate, further enhancing the security of the grill.

When choosing a commercial-grade grill, look for models with theft-proof control knobs to protect your investment and ensure the safety of your outdoor cooking area.
