The pros, the cons, and the facts about this mid-size Louisiana Grills wood pellet grill.

One look at the sturdy, barrel-shaped Louisiana Grills LG 900 and you can see how powerful it is.  It’s a bulldog of a grill, and it promises to be just as durable and tough.  In terms of aesthetics, it doesn’t appear that different from other classic barrel smoker designs, but appearances are often deceiving.

The LG 900 is practically futuristic, in that all you ever have to do is load up the hopper with pellets, set the temperature, and let it go.  You’ll love all of the extras you get with this pellet model at this price range, as well.  Given that it’s already low-priced in comparison with its competitors, you get over the value for your money.

The Louisiana wood pellet grill is the perfect pick for a larger family.  It’s not a dainty grill.  If you have a household that consists of four or five people, or if you enjoy large family gatherings and typically barbecue on the weekends, then this is the ideal size for you.

Few grills actually allow you to simply walk away once you toss the meat on.  This Louisiana Grills model does a good job of controlling the heat, giving you the confidence to do just that.  BBQ masters who are looking for a little freedom, a lot of power, and a ton of heat will be well-served by the LG 900—but, as always, the specs speak for themselves.

Benefits Of The Louisiana Grills LG 900

One of the biggest benefits of the LG 900 is how easy it is to use.  Its “set it and forget it” temperature philosophy is convenient in the same way “plug and play” technology is helpful. No matter how much you love the sizzle of a steak as it sears, you don’t have to be handcuffed to your grill with the LG 900.

This aspect is especially helpful during a long, low, and slow smoking session.  There’s no need to constantly check the meat because once you set the temperature, the grill practically takes care of everything for you.

Some additional benefits to consider are…

A Versatile Wood Pellet Grill That Can Do It All

This Louisiana wood pellet grill is far from a one-trick pony.  Its versatility is among its finer benefits.  It gives you the capabilities to smoke, braise, roast, bake, grill, BBQ, sear and char-grill with its wide temperature range and heat control.

An Advanced Computer Controlled Pellet Feeding Controller

Setting the temperature isn’t hard, either, and there’s no risk of overshooting it.  The built-in digital display PID controller is an advanced piece of technology, but not at all complicated.  The system is all touch-button, and the temperature, which has a range between 180 degrees to 600 degrees Fahrenheit, goes up by increments of five degrees.  That allows for out-of-this-world precision.

Ample Cooking Space For Large Parties

The size of the cooking area is just as impressive. You can easily make food for more than five people on this grill.  The main cooking grate is 633 square inches, which leaves space for plenty of steaks or an extra-large brisket.  On the upper grill, you have 280 square inches, making it just the right size for veggies and cuts of meat that are delicate or small, such as fish or hot dogs and sausages.  That comes to a total of 900 square inches of total cooking space.

Great Add On’s For A Fully Upgradable Grill

Louisiana wood pellet grills often come with plenty of extras and it offers upgrades galore and this one is no exception.  Read any Louisiana Grills LG 900 review and you’ll see reviewers extolling all the accessories you get or can add with your purchase.

The grill comes with a meat probe, for example, which connects straight to the control center. You can also add an extra hopper box that holds 20 lbs of additional pellets, to supplement the 14-lb hopper attached to the grill.

Although it isn’t so much an accessory as a stellar feature, the LG 900 has a cold smoke cabinet that attaches to its right side that you can buy separately.  If you’ve never tried cold smoking your food before, you’ll quickly find yourself smoking everything you can.  You can also upgrade the grill with side racks and a folding front area to increase your prep space.

Using The LG 900 Pellet Grill

Even if you’ve never used a pellet grill before, you won’t have a problem learning your way around the Louisiana Grills LG 900.  Fill the hopper with pellets.  At capacity, the 14 lb hopper is good for up to 7 hours.  For anything longer than that, pop the extra box on top of the grill and fill it up, too.

After that simply set the temperature on the control panel and you’re done.  The grill’s burning system works to reach and then maintain your desired temp for no-hassle grilling.  This grill is even smart enough to reduce the temperature to smoke mode when your food reaches its desired temperature so you won’t overcook it.

Louisiana Grills LG 900 Description And Features

The Louisiana pellet grill’s accessories and special features are just the sprinkles on top.  Its standard features are already well worth it.  So, in addition to its easy-to-use control center and extras such as the hopper box and meat probe, here are a few other stand-out details.

Digital Control Center For Precision Heat Control

The feature that probably stands out the most on the Louisiana LG 900 is that it uses the more advanced digital PID controller for temperature control.  A PID controller gives you so much more control over your heat settings than any other controllers out there do.

It lets you set the temperature in 5-degree increment and has a food temperature probe built in.  This is something normally found only on high-end premium grills and is almost never found in a grill of this price range.

Durability And Longevity

The Louisiana Grills LG 900 features a 14 gauge steel build.  The heavy-duty construction ensures longevity.  A powder coating protects against the weather—but you should always cover your grill, even if you store it in a shed or garage. As long as you care for it, the grill should last you for years.  You get impressive durability for the price you pay.

Precise Temperature Reading

So, this grill is all about the temperature, and precision is the word.  The included meat probe is just one way to get a readout, which appears on the control center.  The control center also gives you the burning temp.  However, there’s a thermometer mounted on the lid of the grill that reveals the temperature inside of the grill chamber, as well.

Wide Temperature Range For Versatile Cooking

The LG 900 can produce a wide temperature range of 180 degrees to over 600 degrees.  It does a good job at lower temperatures and produces a lot of smoke but it doesn’t hold temperatures as well as some of the more expensive premium grills do.

The grill does a great job with higher temperatures and because it can reach up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit, it does produce a pretty decent sear when cooking over the open flame.

Versatile Direct Flame Cooking

The LG 900 has an adjustable flame broiler inside for direct fire cooking.  Its design is rather ingenious.  Leave it in the open position to achieve that professional, diamond-shaped sear that’s signature in steakhouses.  To cook with indirect flames, simply slide closed the broiler cover.

Large Cooking Space

This grill isn’t the biggest you can find, but it does have plenty of cooking space.  You get 633 square inches of main cooking space while the upper rack offers 280 square inches for a comprehensive total of 913 square inches.  That will hold around 20 burgers, which is more than enough for most people.

Porcelain Coated Cast Iron Cooking Grates

The porcelain coated cast iron cooking grates stand up well in the durability department and do a great job of transferring heat directly into the food.

Who Is The Louisiana Grills Pellet Grill For?

Its competitive price, mid-range size, and convenient control panel make it ideal for first-time wood grills or pit masters who are experienced with pellets.  If you are looking for excellent value for your dollar without breaking the bank; you want a large cooking space and are shopping for a grill that will last, the LG 900 could be for you.

Why You Should Think Twice

The body is Heavy-duty 14 gauge powder-coated steel construction, which bodes well for longevity but it is not as well insulated and will not hold the heat as well as more expensive 403-stainless steel made grills.

If you typically do smokes over 7 hours long, you will have to pay attention to refill the 14lb hopper with pellets or you will run out.  You could always purchase the 20lb hopper extension for around $49, but it is shame there is even a need too.

There is also no easy way to clean the leftover ash from this model.  I suggest keeping a shop-vac handy for easy cleanup.

Otherwise, any grill gurus will love this, and it won’t drain your bank account.

Pros And Cons

Prices And Warranties

Through most outlets, including buying directly from Louisiana Grills, the LG 900 is $899. Amazon offers it for a bit less a lot of the time.

The Louisiana Grills 5-year warranty offers protection against any defects or issues with workmanship, while the grill’s electrical components are only covered for three years.  The burn grate isn’t included in either warranty.  They offer good customer support and are responsive so that is a plus as well.

The Bottom Line

I wish the warranty was a little stronger on the Louisiana Grills LG 900, but I’m in favor of the price, the size, the controls, and all the extras. There are better wood pellet grills out there, but not at this price with these features.  If you take nothing else from my Louisiana pellet grill review, remember that value for money is a winner every time.

You will really like this grill if you are looking for the best return on your investment.  This grill easily gets a 10-star rating from me for value for what you get at its price range.
